The Tricentennial ended in 1996. This site archives that history.
Prince George's County Celebrates 300
years of history 1696-1996
Celebration!
Prince George's County is having a party! Next year marks the county's 300
birthday, and everyone is invited. A sense of anticipation and excitement
pervades the atmosphere as citizens and communities busily prepare for the
festivities. And with a year-long series of events planned to commemorate
our Tricentennial, there promises to be something for everyone -- young and
old alike. Residents and visitors will be able to experience the Prince
George's of yesteryear through re-enactments of great moments in history,
tours of historic sites, storytelling, concerts, train and boat rides,
and much more.
From its agricultural beginnings in the 17th and 18th centuries to the
dynamic urban community it has become in the 1990s, Prince George's is
a county steeped in history. Throughout 1996, we will celebrate that
history and will honor the individuals who made it happen.
It has been said that before we know where we are going, we must first
know where we have been. Next year offers the unique opportunity for
all of us not only to experience the past but also to contemplate our
future. Our long history teaches us that the values and goals upon which
the county was build 300 hundred years ago are very much alive today.
They are the pursuit of opportunity and quality of life.
Please plan to join me in wishing Prince George's County a happy 300th
birthday, with many more to come. I look forward to the celebration and
hope you will be there, too!
