PG Tricentennial Prince George's County
Celebrates 300 years of history 1696-1996

APRIL 23, 1996: PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY RINGS IN FOUNDING DAY

Since a Tricentennial comes only once in a lifetime, the Tricentennial Celebration Committee plans to mark the occasion in a big way!

April 23, 1996 marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of Prince George's County. To commemorate this historic event, a day-long celebration is planned which culminates in a Tricentennial Gala at the University of Maryland.

The day begins with a 9 a.m. reenactment of the county being signed into existence at historic Mt. Calvert. The procession of re-creators then proceeds to the present-day county seat, Upper Marlboro.

At exactly 12 noon on the anniversary day a county-wide bell-ringing announces the start of the afternoon festivities. A number of various military units, including R.O.T.C. and veterans' groups will join marching bands and community and cultural organi zations in a parade down Main Street in Upper Marlboro. As the parade winds itself to the County courthouse there will be a ceremony with speeches and presentations from county and state dignitaries. A military fly-over will also add to the day's excite ment.

But it doesn't end there.

As the sun sets behind the Prince George's County horizon on April 23, county residents are invited to go home and get their dancing shoes on! Cole Field House at the University of Maryland, College Park will host a Tricentennial Gala that evening. Event chairs are Brit Kirwan and Ted Howard. Tickets for this elegant night of dinner, dancing and entertainment will be available soon.

Don't miss out on this once-in-three-centuries day of partying!
