Prince George's County
Celebrates 300
years of history 1696-1996
Our celebration involves the planting of wildflowers and trees along roadways and in park areas. In addition, gateway sites into the county will feature Tricentennial gardens with vibrant flowers, foliage and landscape designed specifically for this festive celebration.
Tricentennial planting areas will vary slightly but will remain constant in terms of color. Bright blue, red, white, gold and purple blooms will paint the county to coordinate with the vivid hues in the Great Seal of Prince George's County. Color selection was very important to committee chairs Caroly Billingsley and Mary Godfrey because they want to be sure that visitors identify the plantings as distinctly Prince Georgian. Plant selection at various locations may also incorporate shrubbery, grasses and trees depending upon space availability and sight-line considerations.
Members of the Tricentennial Gateway Plantings Committee are working closely with several state and county government agencies to facilitate plantings on or near highways. They are also seeking the support and participation of several local organizations. Nurseries, landscape companies, garden clubs, municipal governments and schools are being sought to help with the planting and maintenance of gateway projects.
Beyond the specially designed gardens, there are plans to distribute wildflower seed packets and coloring books to school-aged children. This part of the project was created to make sure that all residents, young and not-so-young alike, are able to take part in the beautification of their home.
