PG Tricentennial Prince George's County
Celebrates 300 years of history 1696-1996

Dedication of NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
Goddard Booklet

The arrival of the Industrial Revolution brought dramatic changes to Prince George's County. Transportation and travel increased with the arrival of the B&O Railroad in 1835 and streetcars in 1897. Residents of Prince George's County, previously a rural area, began to commute into the city. Automobiles allowed for more flexible transportation, and the Capital Beltway was competed in 1964. Technological developments such as aviation and space exploration made their mark in Prince George's County as well, as is seen by the College Park Airport, Andrews Air Force Base, and the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center.

This booklet accompanied the dedication of the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt on March 16, 1961. The center was constructed as a field station for NASA in space science, satellite applications research and development, and world-wide tracking and communications.

Currently on display with the 300 Candles: Slices of Prince George's County exhibit in the Maryland Room, 3rd floor, McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland at College Park.
