Prince George's County
Celebrates 300
years of history 1696-1996
Prince George's County has a rich agricultural history which continues today. Although many of the tobacco lands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been lost to suburban development, tobacco continues to be grown in the county and remains a valuable agricultural and economic crop in Maryland. The Beltsville Agricultural Research Center of the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station are leading agricultural forces in Prince George's County.
This photograph was taken at an Agricultural Experiment Station, circa 1930. The Agricultural Experiment Station was established in College Park in 1888 and served as the leader for other stations in the state of Maryland. The second man from the left is John Cotton and the fourth and fifth from the left are Thomas B. Symons and F. B. Bomberger, respectively. From the Archives and Manuscripts Department photograph collection.
Currently on display with the 300 Candles: Slices of Prince George's County exhibit in the Maryland Room, 3rd floor, McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland at College Park.
