Passangers from the Past

A Prince George's County Tricentennial Project

This fall, The Prince George's County Tricentennial Celebration Committee and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission are pleased to offer four train excursions through Prince George's County. This won't be just any ordinary train. As you stretch your imagination to an era gone by, you will be treated to discussions with reenactors with authentic period costumes portraying past Prince Georgeans who have left their marks on history. They will share their stories with you as the train gently rumbles through the beautiful countryside along a little-used railroad traversing the county: the Washington and Baltimore Railroad Pope's Creek line. Some of the figures from the past you may meet along the way could include: Rosalie and George Calvert, a descendant of the Lords of Baltimore and builders and owners of the historic Riversdale Mansion in Riverdale; Henry Vinton Plummer, the first African-American Army chaplain of the post- Civil War era; Sarah Miranda Plummer, founder of St. Paul's Baptist Church in Bladensburg, now known as the Free Hope Baptist Church; the world famous Orville and Wilbur Wright, pioneers of modern aviation; a 19th century woman who would share with you her views of the day; and the namesake of our county, Prince George of Denmark, husband of England's Queen Anne.
