CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH
------------------------------
The first Englishman to see Prince George's County -- long before Maryland was ever established -- was Captain John Smith of Virginia. On his first voyage of discovery out of Jamestown, in June 1608, he sailed up the Potomac all the way to the falls. He wrote, "Here we found mighty Rocks, growing in some places above the ground as high as the shrubby trees..." Courtesy of the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.
