Our parish wanted to invite the Prince George’s County Historical Society to do a story on the upcoming celebration of the 375th anniversary of the founding of the Piscataway Catholic Community, on Sunday July 5th of this year. We are located in lower Prince George’s County, MD.
Our community’s history dates to the Baptism of the Piscataway Chief Kittamaquund by Fr. Andrew White, SJ on July 5th, 1640. This event occurred in what would become our parish’s territory, and we are the only parish that bears the name of the tribe.
We recently commission and mounted a 17 foot high painting of this event, which graces our main church. Attached is a PDF of the flyer for the event. It actually is three events:
1) The noon Mass with the Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal’s Donald Wuerl, with honor guard from the Knights of St. John and the Knights of Columbus.
2) Cardinal Wuerl’s blessing and dedication of a new Cemetery for Unborn Children.
3) A Native American Indian Festival in the afternoon, in cooperation with the Piscataway Tribe, which Cardinal Wuerl will bless and officially open.
