Celebrates 300 years of history 1696-1996

300 Candles: Slices of Prince George's County History

A new exhibit, entitled "300 Candles: Slices of Prince George's County History" and celebrating the 300th anniversary of Prince George's County, highlights events, persons, civic groups, politics, and other aspects of the rich history of the county. Some of the materials include a 1731 land patent from Charles Calvert, the fifth Lord Baltimore, and Chapter XII of the Laws of Maryland at Large which officially created Prince George's county. Notable persons and events such as the 1957 University of Maryland football game attended by Queen Elizabeth II are featured along with pictures of the Adelphi Mill and the College Park Agricultural Experiment Station, reflecting life in the county over the centuries. The exhibit also includes historic maps of Prince George's County, condition books from area race tacks, the dedication of Goddard Space Flight Center, fliers from the Hyattsville Horticulture Society, and other items showing the growth and development of our state over the years.

Dates of exhibit: April 15 to December 24, 1996 The exhibit is located in the Maryland Room, 3rd floor, of McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland at College Park. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. For further information, call (301) 405-9212.
